Angela, the school SSO at Goulburn High, underwent Seasons for Growth training through a Department of Education project, funded by a donation from Schools Plus.
Angela devised a two-week rolling timetable to ensure the successful management of the group. To achieve this, she slightly modified the delivery method and trialled daily delivery over two weeks. The first group of eight students was scheduled for the morning session, while the second group was scheduled for the afternoon. The students were from years 7 and 8.
Angela provided additional support by having a school staff member attend each session, who also witnessed the students' growing resilience.

Angela and her group were visited by several school staff members such as the Counsellor, Canteen Manager, Uniform Shop staff, Office Lady, School Nurse, and Heads of Year. During their visit, each staff member introduced themselves and explained their role. They also described the kind of support they could offer to the students. This visit provided both emotional and practical support to the group and helped them to feel more connected to their school.
Angela found it easy to engage with parents and carers. She maintained a strong partnership with students and their families by inviting them into the school, explaining the details of the Seasons for Growth program over the phone, and sending letters home as a reminder of upcoming sessions.
One of Angela’s highlights was observing the group's appreciation for their journals. They valued their journals as if they were made of gold, realising that their writing was private and did not need to be read out loud. This realisation encouraged them to write more freely. Angela believed that the design of the journal was also a key factor that engaged the students. The appeal of the artwork, the limited number of words, and the beautiful quality of the journals all contributed to their enthusiasm for journaling.
The students have remained connected to Angela, seeking her support whenever they need it. They trust her and rely on her for various things such as bringing them their laundry, mending their clothes, and providing a listening ear during tough times. Angela also gifted each of the students in her Seasons group with a 'Dignity Bag' or a 'Gift Bag' at the end of the program. The bag contained useful items that teenagers can use in their daily life. The students have access to a safe space where they can take a break and make calls to external support when needed. Angela explained that the group created their own set of rules, which are still in place, and their artwork still hangs on the wall in the school hub, as per their request.
We provide high level of support for all staff at all times. The benefits of the program are recognised by the wider staff team. The attendance of some students who participated in Seasons for Growth has improved, and plans are underway to run more groups in the future. The value of peer-to-peer learning within the group was evident, as students voiced that understanding another student’s experience helped them feel more connected. Angela has described her experience as 'fantastic', which is a testament to the program and the role of the Companion in supporting young people through their experiences.
